Henley & Partners, a global citizenship and residence advisory firm based in London, ranked the Moroccan passport in its 2023 Passport Index as the 80th most powerful passport in the world.

The Moroccan passport lost a spot. Last year it was ranked 79th on the list.

The most recent report from the company indicates that Moroccan passport holders can enter 65 nations without a visa and that 162 nations demand one.

Henley & Partners’ report ranked Japan’s passport as the world’s most powerful passport, and Afghanistan’s at the bottom of the list making it the weakest passport in the world.

On this index report, several nations shared the same rank because their passports allow access to the same number of countries.

For example, both Morocco and Ghana share the 80th spot because they allow entry to 65 countries with no visa.

This puts Japan in the first spot, yet Singapore and South Korea both share the second spot, Germany, and Spain both tied for the third spot, and Finland, Italy, and Luxemburg share the fourth spot.

The fifth spot was shared by Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

The Henley Passport Index is the only one of its sort, with 18 years of historical data based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA).

The index’s rating system was created to provide people with a sophisticated, practical, and trustworthy assessment of the power of their passports.

Each passport is graded based on the total number of visa-free places to which the holder has access.

If no visa is required for a certain travel destination, the passport receives a score of one. This is also true if passport holders are able to receive a visa on arrival, a visitor’s permit, or an electronic travel authorization (ETA) upon admission.

There are 199 different passports and 227 different travel places in the index, which is updated quarterly, and is considered the standard reference tool for global citizens and sovereign governments for determining where a passport ranks on the global mobility spectrum.
