The city of Nouakchott was designated, Friday, cultural capital of the Islamic world for the year 2023.
On this occasion, Director General of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), Salem Ben Mohammed El Malek, said that the choice of Nouakchott as the capital of Islamic culture is motivated by its considerable and historical role in science and culture.
Thus, ISESCO will organize a series of activities in Mauritania including the restoration and enhancement of archaeological sites included in the list of Islamic heritage of the Organization and the launch of a forum for young poets, in addition to holding seminars and conferences and institutional support.
For his part, Mauritanian Minister of Culture, Youth, Sports and Relations with Parliament, Mohamed Ould Soueidatt, said that the designation of Nouakchott as a cultural capital is attributable to the major scientific role played by the historic cities of Mauritania and the quality of their libraries equipped with rare manuscripts, in addition to the architectural heritage that has earned these cities to be included on the World Heritage List.
