Lily Rose Depp, daughter of actor Johnny Depp and French singer and model Vanessa Paradis, stirred controversy with comments on nepotism that many deemed to be tone-deaf.
Lily, who has been in big projects ever since she was a child, said that she wants people to know that she is not a nepotism baby in an interview with Elle magazine.
“If somebody’s mom or dad is a doctor, and then the kid becomes a doctor, you’re not going to be like, ‘Well, you’re only a doctor because your parent is a doctor.”
Lily, who played next to big stars in blockbusters said that her childhood “didn’t look like everybody’s childhood” and dealing with fame rather than that of her parents is something she’s “had to make [her] own way with.”
Italian model Vittoria Ciretti who’s far from being a nepotism baby, addressed this on her Instagram.
“You have no idea how much you have to fight to make people respect you. Takes years. You just get it free, from day one.”
Vittoria has been an active model ever since she was 14.
She said, “I bumped into an interview of a so-called ‘nepo baby,’ whatever y’all call it… Yes, I get the whole ‘I’m here and I work hard for it,’ but I would really love to see if you would have lasted thru the first five years of my career. Not only being rejected, because I know you have an experience with it and you can tell me your sad little story about it (even if at the end of the day you can still always go cry on your dad’s couch in your villa in Malibu).”
Sudanese model Anok Yai expressed her thoughts on the matter as well.
“I will see some of you privileged kids stress about not booking a job because of the impact of your career while there are those of us who stress because we don’t know if we’ll be able to take care of our parents this month or put our siblings through school.”
Sudanese Australian model Aweng Afe Chuol , opened up on her struggles back in the day as well.
“I always say this, gratitude is a must. We don’t get to choose to have a cushioned background or not, but for a second- realise your experience.”
Lily Rose Depp is now 23, has so far worked in huge projects such as ‘The King’ with Timothy Chalamet, ‘The Idol’ alongside musician and actor The Weeknd and ‘A faithful man’ with Louis Garrel, in addition to modeling for some of the biggest names in fashion and beauty.
