EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said Thursday that the European Union would send medical supplies to Cuba after a huge fire ripped through an oil storage facility east of Havana.
“Through the Civil Protection Mechanism, the EU is providing aid to Cuba thanks to Spain’s contribution,” the official said on social media.
The EU satellite mapping service Copernicus will provide Cuba with satellite images to help it better manage the blaze, Borrell added.
Lighting started a fire at the Matanzas oil facility on Friday. The firefighting service said Thursday that the flame, which has destroyed four of the eight 50,000-tonne tankers, stopped spreading.
