Two super yachts confirmed to be owned by Roman Abramovich, the previous owner of the Chelsea football club, and former governor of the Russian autonomous district, Chukotka, abruptly left Antigua due to freezing orders. The yachts are now seeking refuge in Morocco to refuel without any issues
The yacht ‘Garcon’ is headed towards Casablanca while ‘Halo’ chose Agadir as a destination, which SuperYachtNews considers unusual.
The two yachts might change their courses anytime according to SuperYachtNews. They also declared that there is a lack of data as to why the vessels were actually allowed to leave Antigua in the first place.
Both yachts have been detained in Antigua ever since March but could not be seized by law, said Antigua and Barbuda’s ambassador in the US, Ronald Sanders, unless the owner of the yacht has committed a crime, according to SuperYachtNews.
The financial Investigation agency of the British virgin island was the one to confirm that the yachts are owned by Roman Abramovich because they are originally registered under Wenham Overseas LTD, whose beneficial owner is Abramovich.
After leaving Antigua, the superyachts headed to Morocco instead of Gibraltar, the ordinary stop for yachts crossing the Atlantic, because they would have been arrested considering that Gibraltar is a British territory, knowing that Abramovich is facing sanctioning orders from the UK.
The reasons behind the sanctioning measures vary, his assets are now frozen, he suffers from a prohibition on all transactions with UK individuals and businesses, plus a travel ban and transport sanctions, all because the UK government believes that he is close to the Russian president Putin.
They said that he has been found to have received preferential treatment and concessions from the Russian government according to sky sports.
