US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken will attend the international anti-ISIS coalition meeting this May 11 in Marrakech, after having contracted the COVID-19 virus last week.

The news was confirmed today by the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement, after a possible postponement made headlines this weekend.

The Marrakesh meeting will be co-chaired by Blinken and Moroccan Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, and will see the participation of over 90 countries.

The meeting is “another step in the continued commitment and international coordination in the fight against ISIS, with a particular focus on the African continent as well as on the evolving terrorist threat in the Middle East and other regions,” said the Ministry in a statement.

Coalition ministers and delegations will review the actions taken in terms of stabilization efforts in areas previously impacted by ISIS, in the area of strategic communication against the radicalization propaganda of this terrorist group and its affiliates, and the fight against foreign terrorist fighters, continued the statement.

Although not yet confirmed, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borell, who are regular attendees at these meetings, are also expected to attend.

The Anti-ISIS Coalition was created in 2014 with the aim of fighting and defeating the terrorist organization in Syria and Iraq.

Morocco’s hosting of this meeting “illustrates once again the trust and esteem enjoyed by the singular approach developed by Morocco in the fight against terrorism, but also for the defense of the interests of the African continent within multilateral platforms,” said the Ministry.
