In his highly anticipated speech during the opening of the Victory day Parade,  celebrating the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany, President Vladimir Putin upheld that Russian soldiers in Ukraine were defending the Motherland from an “absolutely unacceptable threat.”

Thousands of soldiers paraded in Moscow’s Red Square, where Russia marked the 77th anniversary of its victory over Nazi Germany on Monday.

In alignment with previous statements, Putin spoke of how the Russian offensive was the “only right decision,” against rising frictions with the West.

“We saw military infrastructure being ramped up, hundreds of military advisers working and regular deliveries of modern weapons from NATO. (The level of) the danger was increasing every day. Russia preventively rebuffed the aggressor. It was necessary, timely, and … right. The decision of a sovereign, strong, independent country,” he said, according to translations by Reuters.

“Everything indicated that a clash with the neo-Nazis, the Banderites [Ukrainian Nazi sympathizers], backed by the United States and their junior partners, was inevitable.”

The Banderites is a pejorative term used to describe Ukrainian nationalists.

Putin invoked World War II to justify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. ” no one forgets the lessons of the Second World War. So that there is no place in the world for executioners, punishes, and Nazis.”
