Morocco only devotes 0.75% of its GDP to scientific research, according to a report issued by the National Body for the Evaluation of the Education, Training, and Scientific Research System (CSEFRS).
Although the number of PhD students has increased in recent years, only few of them complete the course. “Between 2013 and 2018, the number of PhD students rose sharply (75.2%) from 19,585 to 34,313 students during this period. However, the number of fully-completed PhD thesis never exceeds 2,000 per year,” revealed the report.
In order to encourage PhD students, Morocco grants scholarships for research, which do not exceed MAD 3000 per student.
“This is a little over a third of the salary in the civil service for a Master’s graduate, and barely and barely the equivalent of the minimum wage salaries in Morocco, which is very discouraging for such talented PhD students, after many years of higher education,” the report highlighted.
In 2017 in Morocco, only 1937 students had their PhD degrees.
Students mainly struggle with bibliography and research materials, as 60% of them are not affiliated with any scientific laboratory.
The PhD student must publish at least one research paper in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
