The Public Prosecutor at the Court of Appeal in Rabat announced the arrest and detention of 70 people, including 18 minors, following the riots that ensued at the end of Sunday’s football game between the FAR and MAS teams.
Grand chaos raged the Prince Moulay Abdallah sports complex this weekend, as fans threw stones at each other, used white weapons, and vandalized the complex and nearby vehicles.
A statement from the General Prosecutor’s office confirmed that after making over 60 arrests and following through with a judicial investigation, “70 people, including 18 minors, were identified as the perpetrators of various infractions and crimes,” which resulted in over 120 injuries among the public, and law enforcement personnel present at the scene.
The statement indicated that “a search was conducted with the detainees, during which, in addition to the suspects, victims were heard, including members of the public forces, some of whom were transferred to hospitals to receive the necessary treatment and care.”
After the suspects were presented before the Public Prosecutor, “a petition was submitted for an investigation to be conducted against 42 of the adults, for their commission of acts of forming a criminal gang, sabotaging equipment and using brute force, theft, attempted rape, and obstruction of police vehicles on the way.”
In addition to the aforementioned charges, the Public Prosecutor is also making arrests for people found to be responsible for the “willful perpetuation of violence during the sporting event, throwing stones inside the stadium that may cause harm to others, insulting public officials while they perform their duties, committing violence against them, entering the stadium carrying a weapon and destroying goods intended for the public interest.”
A petition was also submitted for an investigation to be conducted by the Juvenile Entity against 10 minors, for committing the same acts referred to above, and “ordered their detention in the juvenile wing of the prison institution.”
The Public Prosecutor’s statement confirmed the suspects’ cases were referred to the Court of First Instance in Rabat.
