Mbarek Fancha, director of the Provisional Directorate for the Development of RN1 between Tiznit and Dakhla, announced Saturday, February 19, that the strengthening and widening work covering 9 meters of the N1, between Laayoune and Dakhla, has been completed at 100%.
As part of the megaproject of the Tiznit-Dakhla expressway, the development of the national road between Laayoune and Dakhla mobilized an estimated budget of MAD 900 million, Mbarek Fancha announced during a delegation from the interior ministry’s commission for local government and infrastructure’s visit to the House of Councilors.
A partnership agreement between Tiznit and Dakhla, signed in 2015 before King Mohammed VI in Laâyoune, aims to build a road axis with significant technical standards, reducing travel times and enhancing comfort and road safety. It was one of the region’s flagship development projects with an estimated completion time of six years, local media reports.
This will facilitate the transport of goods between the cities of southern Morocco and the production and distribution centers.
The 200 km long road is expected to be a crucial link between the southwestern city of Tan-Tan and the city of Laayoune in Western Sahara. According to Yassine Ansir, the Head of the technical installations department, the Tiznit-Dakhla Highway project has already strengthened and widened the road linking Laayoune and Dakhla, reports Construction Review Online.
In addition to strengthening Morocco’s economic and commercial ties with Africa, this flagship project represents a new development model for the south of the country.
The project is a result of collaboration between the Ministry of Equipment, Transport, Logistics, and Water, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of the Economy and Finance as well as the regions of Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra, Guelmim-Oued Noun, Dakhla-Oued Eddahab and Souss Massa.
Morocco plans to invest around $25 billion in road construction by 2035. During the course of the investment, more than 5,500 kilometers of highways and expressways will be built. Furthermore, over 7,000 km of rural roads will be modernized, along with 45,000 km of new rural roads.
