Queen Elizabeth II celebrates 70 years of reign over the United Kingdom this Sunday, February 6.
Queen Elizabeth II has expressed her wish that Prince Charles’ wife, Camilla, will become Queen Consort when he becomes King, ending a long debate on the subject.
In a message written on the occasion of her platinum jubilee, a milestone no British monarch had ever reached before, the 95-year-old queen expressed her “sincere wish” that Camilla “be known as queen consort” when Prince Charles, 73, takes the throne.
Until now, she had never said anything on the subject, which has been at the heart of a decades-long controversy.
Camilla, a divorcee, has long been perceived as the one who broke up the fairy tale marriage of Prince Charles with Princess Diana, as she was later revealed to be the prince’s mistress.
Traditionally, February 6 is a bittersweet day for Queen Elizabeth, as it is both the date of her accession to the throne in 1952 at the age of 25, and the date of the death of her father, King George VI, of lung cancer at 56 years old.
This year is also the first anniversary of her reign without her husband, Prince Philip, who died in April 2021 at age 99.
The British monarchy is going through a turbulent period between accusations of sexual assault aimed at the queen’s son, Andrew, and her grandson Harry’s recent “differences” with the family.
