The official spokesman for the Moroccan government, Mustapha Baitas, said on Thursday the issue of reopening the borders “is being discussed seriously within the government,” and from a different point of view.

In the press briefing after the government council, Baitas said that the government is gathering all the facts and data around the development of the sanitary situation both domestically and across the world.

According to the official, the government is studying all the economic, social, and psychological repercussions of the imminent reopening.

The government spokesman confirmed that “the government studied the issue during its meeting today, and the discussion will remain open based on the data that will be collected, as an appropriate decision will be announced in the coming days.”

Moroccan borders have been closed since the emergence of the new Omicron COVID-19 variant. Moroccans have been anticipating the reopening of borders since, as many professionals keep denouncing the dire consequences the closure has had on local businesses.

In addition, many Moroccans remain stranded abroad, unable to return home despite many repatriation trips.
