The Ministry of Health and Social Protection has updated the national protocol for the treatment of patients with Covid-19 on  January 18.

Molnupiravir, a new drug developed by Merck, has recently been introduced to the market.

As a result of changes to health care in Morocco, the Covid-19 care protocol has been updated. Molnupiravir is now available for those aged 18 and older with at least one risk factor and who have been ill for less than five days.

A technical data sheet for this antiviral, which targets the replication of the virus as its therapeutic target, indicates that a dose of four 200 mg capsules orally every 12 hours for five days is recommended. The administration of Molnupiravir should begin as soon as possible after a diagnosis of Covid-19 is made and within five days of the onset of symptoms.

Merck’s drug is prescribed for adults over 18 years old, with at least one risk factor for developing a serious form, such as, among others, cardiovascular problems, unbalanced or complicated diabetes, chronic respiratory problems that decompensate during viral infections, or progressive cancer in treatment. In patients with renal impairment and hepatic impairment, no dosage adjustment is necessary.

The drug, on the other hand, should be avoided during pregnancy. Additionally, women with the potential to become pregnant should use effective contraception throughout the treatment and for four days following the last dose of Molnupiravir. After the last dose of Molnupiravir, it is recommended that men use effective contraception for three months. During treatment, breastfeeding should be avoided for a period of four days after taking the last dose of Molnupiravir.

This same technical sheet states that any side effects observed during treatment with Molnupiravir must be reported to the physician and pharmacist of the patient’s choice, or to the poison control and pharmacovigilance center at the toll-free number 0801 000 180.

Those with asymptomatic or mild symptoms, including those with or without risk factors, are also taken care of at home, the Ministry of Health reminds. The service health center must make sure to regularly monitor the state of the patient’s health, in order to detect early signs of aggravation or undesirable effects of treatment.

The hospital will systematically admit patients who are in severe or critical conditions or whose condition has worsened without any clinical improvement. Those with moderate forms and at least one risk factor, as well as those with severe or critical forms, are treated at a hospital.
