Sudan’s security forces have killed at least three anti-coup protesters, according to medics, as thousands of people rallied across Sudan to denounce the military coup following the resignation of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok.
Two protesters were killed in Omdurman, while in the Sudanese capital’s district of Bahri, one demonstrator was shot and killed, according to the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors (CCSD).
Protesters gathered in several cities in Sudan on Thursday, the first large-scale demonstration since the Prime Minister resigned.
The rallies are the latest in a series of protests since Sudan’s armed forces, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, staged a power grab on October 25, which was condemned by the international community.
As a result of the military coup that removed civilian leadership, the transition towards democracy already had been unstable following the April 2019 turnover of Sudan’s longtime leader Omar al-Bashir.
The CCSD reported that the first unidentified protester was killed when he took a “live bullet to the head by the putschist forces as he took part in demonstrations” in Omdurman.
Thursday’s killings brought the total death toll since the coup to 60, the CCSD said.
The new fatalities come a day after US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, called on Sudanese authorities to “cease using lethal force against demonstrators & commit to an independent investigation.”
