Borders between Morocco and the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla will remain closed until January 31, 2022, following the Spanish Interior Ministry’s decision which was published this Wednesday, December 29.

Borders will remain closed for at least a month, this decision was confirmed by a decree signed by the Spanish Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, as part of the country’s health restrictions.

According to the decree of July 17, 2020, relating to the criteria for applying a temporary restriction on non-essential travel from third countries to the European Union, and the countries associated with it in the Schengen area, for reasons of public order and health.

These borders have been closed since March 13, 2020, following Morocco’s decision to implement a state health emergency, while, the border crossings were opened, in an exceptional way, to allow the repatriation by land of Spanish and EU nationals stranded in Morocco.

The country had briefly reopened borders back in May 2020, enabling stranded Moroccans to travel back home.
