Moroccan Minister of Health Khalid Ait Taleb, announced that the national authorities detected 76 cases of the new Omicron variant in the country, while 246 are suspected of carrying the mutation and are awaiting test results.

Ait Taleb, who was a guest on the national SNRT TV channel, revealed that a first case of the Omicron variant is currently admitted to the intensive care unit this Tuesday.

The minister linked the patient’s deteriorating state to her “delay in getting her scheduled booster shot,” while encouraging the population to get vaccinated to avoid “a worsening epidemiological situation.”

Despite the government official agreeing that Omicron seems to be less fatal than the Delta mutant, Ait Taleb called on citizens to remain careful, as “the Omicron variant spreads five times quicker and easier than the Delta variant,” constituting a potential risk of reaching maximum hospital occupancy.

The minister attributed the concentration of the variant in the two cities of Casablanca and Rabat to large numbers of gatherings and urban overcrowding, which he said: “constitutes fertile grounds for the virus’ spread.”

Khalid Ait Taleb additionally called for the rapid and broad involvement of all citizens in the national vaccination campaign, emphasizing the importance of receiving all the recommended shots.
