Sudan’s military reinstates civilian prime minister, Abdallah Hamdok.

Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok has been reinstated by the country’s army, while thousands are still protesting in Sudanese streets.

Almost a month after seizing power, Sudan’s military leadership released the civilian Prime Minister and signed an agreement reinstating him to office as part of Sudan’s gradual transition to democracy.

Thousands of political detainees are set to be released as Sudan’s military, as its leaders attempt to amend the country’s current situation.

Hamdok, who had been detained and put under house arrest in the aftermath of the October 25 coup, said he made the decision to return to prevent further violence.

He said he had been given free rein by the military to form a technocratic transitional government and that elections would still be held before July 2023.

Hamdok has been criticized by local pro-democracy groups such as the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC), for agreeing to return to the office.

Despite Hamdok’s attempts to “ease the situation and avoid escalation,” thousands are still taking to the streets in protest at the president’s decision to work with coup leader, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
