Sudanese anti-coup protestors have built barricades and roadblocks all around the capital overnight Saturday, following calls to protest last month’s coup.
According to AFP correspondents and witnesses, activists were seen Saturday night piling up bricks and slabs to block Khartoum streets.
The preparations followed calls for civil disobedience by the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) which were instrumental in the 2018-2019 civil revolt that ousted long-time president Omar al-Bashir.
SPA appeals circulated via text messages to bypass the internet outage since October 25, the day of the coup.
“The Sudanese people have rejected the military coup,” the SPA said on Twitter, vowing “no negotiation, no partnership, no legitimacy”.
Nationwide protests have been met by a deadly crackdown, as at least 14 protestors were killed and 300 wounded, according to the Central Committee of Sudan’s Doctors.
Almost two weeks ago Sudan’s top general Abdel Fattah al-Burhan dissolved the government as well as the ruling joint military-civilian Sovereign Council that was supposed to lead the country toward full civilian rule.
The military takeover was met with international condemnation, sparking aid cuts and demands for a return to civilian rule.
