Tens of thousands of Sudanese gathered in the country’s capital of Khartoum on Saturday and other cities, to demand the reversal of the military coup and the restoration of a civilian-led government in the country.

Sudanese flags were being waved in neighborhoods across Khartoum as the people chanted “Military rule can’t be praised” and “This country is ours, and our government is civilian.”

Protests have been raging in the country ever since Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s cabinet was ousted on Monday by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, which led many Western states to freeze aid to the country.

At least 11 people died in clashes with security forces during this week’s protests.

General Burhan dissolved on Monday the military-civilian Sovereign Council that had been established to guide Sudan, following the overthrow of long-term dictator Omar al-Basheer in a popular uprising.

Despite an economic crisis that worsened under Hamdok, he remains popular with the people, as many were seen carrying his picture during protests.

A 75-year-old man from Khartoum told Reuters “Hamdok is supported by the people. If Hamdok takes the country that’s okay.”

Earlier on Friday, Reuters sources indicated that Hamdok is willing to negotiate the formation of a new government, on the condition that the military reverses its coup and releases detainees.
