Pro-civilians carried on with protests in Sudan today, a day after the country’s armed forces launched a military coup.
Protesters blocked roads in Khartoum after the takeover, calling for the return of civil rule.
Gen Burhan has said Monday’s coup was to avoid “civil war” and that the detained prime minister will be returned to his home on Tuesday, according to Reuters.
Sudan’s military placed Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok under house arrest on Monday after moving him to an unknown location for refusing to support “an apparent coup,” according to the information ministry’s Facebook post.
Several other senior government figures were also reportedly detained early on Monday. Military forces also stormed Sudan’s state broadcaster in the nearby city of Omdurman and detained workers, the information ministry added.
Soldiers opened fire on crowds and reportedly killed 10 people on Monday.
The coup has drawn global condemnation, as the UN Security Council prepares to meet on Tuesday to discuss the crisis.
