The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) named the singer the Weeknd as Goodwill Ambassador of its program, according to UN WFP’s website
This WFP program aims to provide life-saving food assistance to over 100 million people in more than 80 countries.
“The U.N. World Food Program is doing urgent and important work to change and save lives on a daily basis and I feel passionate about addressing world hunger and helping people in need,” said The Weeknd, adding “Our partnership is an authentic extension of all our efforts and intentions to help those in need and bring an end to so much suffering,” according to UN WFP’s website.
The Weeknd holds the record of the top-ranked hits in the US, in songs such as Take my breath, Save your tears, Blinding Lights, and Starboy, is a passionate advocate and generous supporter of humanitarian causes, having donated over USD 3 million to various organizations in the past year.
The singer, therefore, joined an international roster of ambassadors, including Kate Hudson and Michael Kors, who support WFP’s mission to make an end to hunger.
The Weeknd didn’t forget about his roots, as his parents are both from Ethiopia, but then they emigrated to Canada.
Most recently, he donated $ 1 million to WFP relief efforts in Northern Ethiopia, following months of deadly violence.
