Australia will not receive any tourists until next year, declared Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Tuesday. Instead, priority to enter the country will be given to skilled migrants and students.
The decision came after the country failed to reach the vaccination benchmark at which it was expected to open up: Fully vaccinating 80% of the eligible population.
“The next priorities are skilled migrants that are very important for the country and who are double vaccinated, as well as students who are coming and returning to Australia for their studies,” Morrison told Seven Network television.
Australia has witnessed a low rate of immigration since the second World War.
Now, in the context of the pandemic, Australian Universities that rely mainly on the fees paid by international students find themselves in a tough spot.
“We will get to international visitors as well, I believe next year,” Morrison added.
