A French participant in the Marathon des Sables in Merzouga died on Monday afternoon following a heart attack during the 35th edition of this sporting event.
In his 50s, the competitor had fulfilled all the medical requirements before the race and had successfully completed the first stage, without having recourse to the medical service, the organizers said in a press release.
“After his discomfort, he was immediately rescued by two other competing doctors, who triggered the SOS and started the cardiac massage protocol. The medical director of the event arrived at the scene in the following minutes through a helicopter”, the same source said, adding, ” after forty-five minutes of intensive care, the medical staff noted the death of the participant.”
This is the third death to occur in the Marathon des Sables in its editions, the same source said.
The director, Patrick Bauer, and the whole family of the Marathon des Sables express their sincere condolences to those close to him, ” the press release added.
“To respect all the people who are a part of this adventure, the staff decided to continue the race. A minute of silence will be observed before the start of the third stage ”, concluded the press release.
