La Palma volcano: fears of toxic gas as lava creeps closer
Tuesday 28 September 2021 - 18:13

Having erupted nine days ago, lava from La Palma’s volcano is approaching the sea with just a kilometer between the molten rock and the coast.

The volcano resulted in the production of two lava rivers that led numerous residents of the island evacuate after having their houses destroyed.

The lava was flowing toward the sea in two different streams. One is moving slowly from the southern coast, while the other is currently between 800-1,000 meters away from the northwestern coast of La Palma, demonstrated the Spanish Department of National Security.

Tracing its activities in the awake of the eruption, the volcano has shown slight stability until an overnight explosion on Monday.

The protruded explosion is expecting a release of toxic gas in case the lava reaches the sea. The worrisome situation led residents in several neighborhoods to confine themselves home fearing the emissions.

“One of the things we have noticed in the last hour as the sun has risen is just how much thick black smoke there is coming out of the top of the volcano and collecting overhead,” reported Sky News. “The big concern now is and when this lava is going to hit the sea. It is a very steep slope from the top of the volcano down to the coast.”

Back in 1949 and 1971 eruptions in La Palma took place, causing a total of three deaths that were caused by gas inhalation.
