After 24 hours closure due to Cumbre Vieja volcano which erupted a week ago, the airport of La Palma reopened its doors on Sunday while maintaining the suspension of flights.
The airport of the Spanish island expects to keep the flights on hold until the ashes thrown by the volcano are cleaned. The eruption has not only suspended flights but destroyed hundreds of houses, forcing nearly 6,000 residents to evacuate.
All the previously scheduled flights have been canceled, proceeding with this way until conditions improve to allow safe flights.
“The ash cloud originating from the volcanic eruption makes it necessary to maintain the temporary stoppage of flights to La Palma,” stated Binter, the Canary Island airline. “The stoppage will continue until conditions improve and allow flying, guaranteeing safety.”
After the news of cancellation spread, ferry operator Fred Olsen Express declared on Sunday, it would add an extra round trip from Monday until Wednesday between La Palma and Tenerife.
“Fred Olsen Express will increase connections… to continue meeting the demand for transport generated by the emergency situation caused by the volcanic eruption,” it said in a statement.
Since the volcano erupted, no fatalities or injuries were recorded.
