Citizens of southwest city of Sidi Ifni are weary of a five-day-long water cut that has left homes without access to drinking water amid temperatures soaring to more than 40C°.

Local resident Mohammed Madih said residents relied on bottled water and neighbors’ help to access drinking water. “The worst thing is they do not tell us that the water will be cut off so that we can take necessary precautions and be ready, meaning there is neglect and lack of interest,” Madih told Hespress Eng.

He says water cuts are frequent in the arid city, bordering the northern Sahara desert.
“The water cut off in the city is not the first or the second time, this cut is continuous and always happens, especially in the summer,” he said, adding citizens staged a protest recently to demand authorities to solve the straggling issue.
“We held a protest to express our anger and these immoral behaviors that do not take into account the residents because water is a natural right for every human being.”

In 2017, Zagora’s residents took to the streets to demand the provision of drinking water to the population, which was known as the “thirst protests.”

Authorities then intervened and arrested 21 protestors, most of which were young people.
In May, “thirst protests” started again in some rural areas in the province of Zagora after water was cut off from household taps.

Morocco was identified as “very vulnerable” by the 4th Assessment Report of the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), its regions are affected by drought, increase in average temperatures, heatwaves, changing rainfall patterns, extreme rainfalls, floods and sea level rise.
