Moroccan authorities intercepted two boats carrying irregular migrants off the southern Atlantic coast on Tuesday, officials said, as attempts to reach Europe via maritime routes continue along North Africa’s shoreline.
The Royal Gendarmerie in Sidi Ifni stopped an attempted departure from the coastal commune of Asbouya, where a boat carrying 50 people from sub-Saharan African countries was preparing to sail, according to local sources.
Authorities seized an inflatable boat, fuel and equipment believed to be used in irregular migration operations.
In a separate incident, a second boat carrying 40 migrants ran aground on a beach within the urban area of Sidi Ifni, officials said.
Preliminary information indicates the vessel had departed three days earlier from the Agadir coastline before drifting toward Sidi Ifni for reasons that remain unclear.
Moroccan authorities regularly report interceptions of irregular migration attempts along both the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts, as the country remains a key transit point for migrants seeking to reach Europe.
