Morocco’s parliamentary Left Alliance has demanded an update on judicial investigations into the 1965 abduction of opposition leader Mehdi Ben Barka, calling on the Justice Ministry to disclose the status of judicial cooperation requests linked to the unresolved case.

In a written parliamentary question submitted on November 5, MP Omar Benjelloun sought clarification on the progress of investigations and the fate of evidence gathered through cooperation between Moroccan and French judicial authorities.

Ben Barka, a prominent figure in Morocco’s nationalist movement and the National Union of Popular Forces, disappeared in Paris on October 29, 1965. His fate remains unknown.

Benjelloun referred to judicial proceedings in France during the late 1960s and subsequent efforts to investigate the disappearance through Morocco’s Equity and Reconciliation Commission.

According to the lawmaker, the outcome of hearings conducted under Franco-Moroccan judicial cooperation remains unclear, while French investigators have yet to establish a definitive account of the case.

He also referred to what he described as Morocco’s subsequent acknowledgment of responsibility, a claim made in the parliamentary question.

The request, submitted shortly after the 61st anniversary of Ben Barka’s disappearance, calls for greater public access to information about outstanding judicial proceedings and any recent developments.
