The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced on Saturday that it had dismissed Hossam Hassan as head coach of the national team and terminated the contracts of his technical and administrative staff, appointing Ceramica Cleopatra coach Ali Maher to lead the Pharaohs in the coming period.
In an official statement, the association said the decision followed a board meeting to review recent developments and their consequences, which it said had negatively affected the national team’s image and stability.
The EFA stressed that the national team’s interests and stability remained its top priorities, adding that the decision to end its relationship with Hassan and his staff had been taken in accordance with the terms of their contract.
The association also thanked Hassan for his efforts during his tenure and wished him success in his future coaching career.
The EFA’s board assigned Maher, currently in charge of Ceramica Cleopatra, to take over the national team and prepare a proposal for the composition of his new technical staff.
The change comes despite the association’s earlier announcement that it had extended Hassan’s contract until 2030, following Egypt’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Egypt reached the round of 16 at the tournament before being eliminated by Argentina, losing 3-2 in a closely contested match.
The national team is preparing for two matches against Malawi during the November international break as part of the qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
The Egyptian Football Association called on supporters and other stakeholders to continue backing the players and the new coaching staff as the team prepares for upcoming continental competitions.
