Morocco’s House of Representatives Speaker Ahmed Touizi called Monday for the complete withdrawal of MINURSO’s personnel, vehicles and equipment from the southern provinces, saying the expiry of the UN mission’s mandate marked the end of a 35-year chapter in the Sahara dispute.

Speaking during a joint session of Parliament’s two chambers on November 2, Touizi said the failure to renew MINURSO’s mandate represented a major turning point requiring concrete measures to address its consequences.

He said the development went beyond a technical decision concerning a UN peacekeeping mission and signaled a fundamental change in the international handling of the dispute.

Touizi echoed the Royal Cabinet’s October 30 statement, which said MINURSO’s presence in the southern provinces should end in the coming days, including the withdrawal of personnel, vehicles, equipment, flags and other symbols.

The parliamentary session followed Friday’s Security Council deadlock, when Russia vetoed an American resolution backed by 11 members seeking to renew and restructure MINURSO. A competing Russian proposal also failed.

Touizi said the developments built on Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted in 2025, which strengthened the position of Morocco’s autonomy initiative in the negotiating process.

He described the joint parliamentary gathering, held during celebrations marking the first anniversary of Unity Day, as an expression of national consensus behind King Mohammed VI.

The meeting was devoted to political statements on the latest Sahara developments.
