Moroccan authorities on Saturday referred a 66-year-old Libyan national to prosecutors after arresting him in Bouznika under an international warrant issued by Libyan judicial authorities, Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security said.
The man was arrested following security coordination between police in Bouznika and the Royal Gendarmerie in Mansouria. An identity check showed that he was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice requested by Libya’s National Central Bureau in Tripoli.
He is suspected by Libyan authorities of links to an international drug-trafficking network and of escaping from prison, according to Moroccan authorities.
Preliminary investigation findings indicate that Libyan authorities arrested the man in 2002 over suspected links to a criminal network involved in international drug trafficking. He was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment before escaping from prison in 2011, Moroccan authorities said.
The suspect has been placed under extradition proceedings on instructions from the competent public prosecutor’s office.
Morocco’s Interpol office in Rabat, which operates under the General Directorate of National Security, has been tasked with notifying its Libyan counterpart of the arrest as the extradition process proceeds.
The arrest comes as Moroccan security authorities continue to cooperate with international law enforcement agencies in tracking and apprehending people wanted in connection with cross-border crimes, the statement said.
