Morocco has called for an international code of conduct for countries bordering strategic maritime straits, with Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita saying their management carries international responsibilities.
Speaking at an informal U.N. Security Council meeting organized by Bahrain in New York, Bourita said the proposed code should uphold freedom of navigation and keep international shipping routes open, safe and stable.
He offered to host an international forum in Morocco, in coordination with Bahrain, to promote respect for international law and exchange best practices.
Bourita said about 100,000 ships pass through the Strait of Gibraltar annually, equivalent to nearly 300 a day, underscoring Morocco’s responsibility for the waterway’s safety.
Morocco views its location as a responsibility and a means of supporting cooperation, stability and development, he said.
He described seas and oceans as essential global infrastructure, calling for stronger international cooperation to address security threats and maintain the uninterrupted flow of shipping.
