Earthquakes recorded in Granada province in August caused localized damage to some elements of the Alhambra, prompting monument officials to step up preventive inspections in part of the Alcazaba, which is currently closed to the public.

“Localized anomalies” were detected in several embrasures, particularly around the Tower of Homage and the Quebrada Tower, the Alhambra Council said in a statement.

As a precaution and to ensure safety, the affected areas have been cordoned off and secured to prevent any elements from falling outward. The affected embrasures have also undergone stabilization and safety measures.

According to initial assessments by technical teams, the affected elements, which resulted from interventions carried out during the first decades of the 20th century, do not show any significant structural damage.

Data collection operations were also launched this week to conduct detailed surveys and more accurately assess the condition of the affected structures.

The measures are part of an inspection campaign launched following the series of earthquakes recorded in the Granada region in August. The campaign aims to identify any cracks, fissures or other alterations affecting the monument complex and its associated properties.

The data collected will also be used to feed digital models designed to analyze how the buildings would behave in the event of future earthquakes, as part of the “Alhambra Living Lab” project, developed using the monument’s digital twin.

The Alhambra Council said detailed inspections will continue alongside the usual monitoring and control protocols to ensure the preservation of the monument and the safety of visitors and staff.
