Morocco placed 34th among 100 countries in a new private ranking of small and medium-sized enterprise potential, but the publisher acknowledges that its figures are rough estimates rather than verified statistics.

Toronto-based Expothon estimated that Morocco has 1.5 million SMEs, including 600,000 businesses it classified as having high growth potential. The kingdom ranked fourth among Arab League members, behind Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

India led the National SME Mobilization Global Index with more than 65 million businesses, followed by China and the United States. The Maldives, Chad and Niger ranked last.

Expothon said it constructed the index using AI-assisted analysis of World Bank, OECD and national sources. It conceded that most countries lack consistent systems and definitions for counting SMEs and described its estimates as “rough at best.”

The publisher does not explain fully how it reconciles national definitions, informal businesses or differences in company-registration systems, making direct comparisons difficult.

Its Morocco estimate also differs substantially from narrower official data. The Moroccan Observatory for Very Small, Small and Medium Enterprises counted about 278,000 active corporate entities in 2024. That figure excludes other legal and informal categories and is therefore not directly comparable with Expothon’s total.

The organization’s “high-potential” category reflects its own model rather than observed company performance. Expothon generally assumes that 20% of SMEs have high potential and projects additional output if some receive intensive training and AI tools.

Expothon argues that technology, management support, and export training can help businesses enter new markets and increase revenue. Its claim that participating firms could quadruple revenue within 1,000 days is a projection, not a documented outcome presented in the index.
