Spain has opened two reception centers in Ceuta as part of a plan to provide 1,800 accommodation places for migrants left without shelter after July’s mass border crossings, the Migration Ministry said Thursday.
The facilities will expand as work on other sites is completed. Transfers are voluntary and intended to move migrants from streets and beaches into accommodation providing access to food, water and sanitation.
Madrid says about 72,000 people entered Ceuta from Morocco on July 30 and 31, while 70,000 subsequently returned. Those remaining include unaccompanied minors whose cases must be assessed individually under Spanish law.
The government also plans to transfer 500 girls, some aged 10 or 11, to facilities on mainland Spain.
