Belgian police have arrested a 70-year-old man at Antwerp Airport after he allegedly attempted to flee to Morocco while under investigation for the suspected physical and sexual abuse of a minor family member.
According to Belgian media, the arrest came after Antwerp police alerted airport authorities that the suspect was preparing to board a flight to Morocco. Officers intercepted him shortly before departure and placed him in custody.
Belgian newspaper HLN reported that the investigation stems from allegations that the man sexually assaulted a minor relative on May 27.
According to the report, the child later disclosed the alleged abuse to her father, who intended to confront the suspect. Authorities intervened before that confrontation took place.
The suspect was arrested before boarding the flight and remains in custody as the investigation continues.
Belgian authorities have not released additional information about the alleged victim or the specific circumstances of the case, in accordance with privacy laws protecting minors.
Prosecutors have also not announced whether formal charges have been filed, and the suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
