Morocco to launch SMS alert system as climate risks intensify

Morocco will introduce an SMS-based early warning system to alert residents to extreme weather events, authorities said, as the country strengthens disaster preparedness in response to increasingly frequent climate-related hazards.

Speaking before the House of Representatives on Monday, the Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, revealed that the state will soon implement a direct SMS alert system. Developed in partnership with the Ministry of Interior, the system will send real-time notifications to residents in high-risk zones, allowing them to take immediate precautions.

To support this initiative, Morocco has reinforced its meteorological network by installing 243 automatic weather stations. These new facilities are designed to significantly improve data collection and forecast accuracy across the country.

Furthermore, the government is expanding its vigilance coverage from 75 provinces to a nationwide scope that includes 1,503 local communes.

Local authorities, including governors, municipal officials and local administrators, will also receive daily weather updates via SMS to improve coordination and speed up emergency responses.

The minister said the government is also revising the country’s flood-risk maps to reflect the changing impact of climate change and preparing a new mapping system to monitor river flows and flood-prone waterways.

Last week, the government approved legislation to transform the General Directorate of Meteorology into the Moroccan Agency for Meteorology and Climate, a reform intended to strengthen weather forecasting, climate monitoring and disaster prevention.

The country has alternated between years of severe drought and episodes of intense rainfall that triggered flooding in several regions, highlighting growing pressure on infrastructure and emergency response systems.
