Archbishop Cristóbal López Romero spent decades serving Catholic communities across three continents before becoming the face of the Church in Morocco. Today, the Spanish-born archbishop of Rabat is under a Vatican investigation into sexual assault allegations, accusations he denies.

From southern Spain to Latin America

Born on May 19, 1952, in Vélez-Rubio, a town in Spain’s southeastern Almería province, López Romero grew up in a working-class Catholic family. His parents, Francisco López and Josefa Romero, raised him during the years of postwar Spain, where Catholicism played a central role in daily life.

From an early age, López Romero was drawn to religious service and education.

At 12, he entered the Salesian junior seminary in Almería, joining the religious order founded by St. John Bosco, whose mission focuses on educating and supporting young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

He made his first religious profession as a Salesian in 1968 and later completed his perpetual vows in 1974, formally committing himself to a life of poverty, chastity and obedience within the order.

During those years, he studied philosophy and theology at Salesian institutions in Spain, preparing for the priesthood while also developing an interest in communication and journalism, skills he would later use extensively in his ministry.

On May 19, 1979, his 27th birthday, López Romero was ordained a priest and soon embarked on what would become decades of missionary work in Latin America.

His first major assignment took him to Paraguay, where he spent nearly two decades. There, he worked as a teacher, parish priest, youth minister and communications specialist, serving communities far removed from the corridors of the Vatican.

He also directed Catholic media outlets and became known for promoting education and social outreach.

López Romero briefly returned to Spain before taking on new missions in Bolivia where he continued working with Salesian communities, focusing on youth, pastoral care and education while serving in several leadership roles within the religious order.

Between 2003 and 2011, he led the Salesian province in Paraguay, overseeing the order’s educational and pastoral activities across the country. Those years established him as an experienced church administrator with international experience.

Rising through the Church to lead Catholics in Morocco

In 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him bishop of the Diocese of San Ignacio de Velasco in eastern Bolivia. The appointment marked his first role as a bishop and brought him into the ranks of the Catholic hierarchy.

Six years later, in December 2017, Pope Francis named López Romero archbishop of Rabat, succeeding French Archbishop Vincent Landel.

López Romero formally took office in Morocco in March 2018, becoming spiritual leader of a Catholic community of roughly 30,000 people, most of them foreign residents, migrants and students in a country where more than 99% of the population is Muslim.

In Morocco, López Romero quickly became one of the Vatican’s leading advocates for Christian-Muslim dialogue, migration and peaceful coexistence.

His international profile grew further in March 2019 when Morocco hosted Pope Francis for a historic two-day visit which Romero played a key role in organizing.

The visit cemented his reputation as one of the Catholic Church’s most prominent voices in North Africa.

Later that year, Pope Francis elevated him to the College of Cardinals, making him one of Africa’s most influential Catholic leaders despite serving one of the continent’s smallest dioceses.

The appointment also made him eligible to vote in a future papal conclave and, in theory, to be elected pope himself.
