Morocco’s flagship frigate, RMNS Mohammed VI, is set to participate in the International Naval Review 250 in New York from July 3 to 8, underscoring the Kingdom’s growing maritime capabilities and longstanding defense partnership with the United States.
The event is part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy and the 250th anniversary of American independence. The international gathering will bring together naval vessels from several countries in a display of maritime cooperation and naval heritage.
Lieutenant Commander Darius Radzius, a public affairs officer supporting U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa and U.S. Sixth Fleet communications efforts, said Morocco’s participation reflects both operational capability and the enduring relationship between Rabat and Washington.
According to Radzius, RMNS Mohammed VI’s deployment is part of a broader African naval presence participating in a U.S.-hosted international naval review that includes transatlantic crossings by participating vessels.
He highlighted the historical significance of Morocco’s participation, pointing to the Treaty of Peace and Friendship signed between Morocco and the United States in 1786. The agreement is widely recognized as the longest continuously maintained treaty relationship in U.S. history.
Beyond its diplomatic symbolism, the deployment serves as a demonstration of the Royal Moroccan Navy’s operational readiness. Long-range maritime missions require advanced planning and execution across multiple domains, including navigation, logistics, maintenance, communications, and command-and-control operations over extended distances.
Commissioned in 2014, RMNS Mohammed VI is one of the most advanced vessels in the Royal Moroccan Navy. The frigate incorporates a semi-stealth design intended to reduce radar and thermal detection and is equipped with sophisticated weapons, surveillance, and combat management systems.
Over the past decade, the vessel has played a central role in Morocco’s naval modernization efforts, participating in multinational exercises and maritime security operations. Its deployment to New York further reflects the Kingdom’s ability to conduct long-distance naval missions and operate alongside international partners.
The frigate’s arrival in New York Harbor is expected to highlight Morocco’s strategic maritime position at the crossroads of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, reinforcing the country’s role as a bridge between Africa, Europe, and the broader transatlantic community.
The mission also comes amid deepening defense cooperation between Morocco and the United States, particularly in the areas of maritime security, military interoperability, joint exercises, and regional stability.
For both countries, the participation of RMNS Mohammed VI in International Naval Review 250 represents not only a celebration of historic ties but also a reflection of an evolving strategic partnership centered on security cooperation and shared maritime interests.
