Hyundai Rotem has secured a railway maintenance contract in Morocco worth 748.2 billion won ($487 million), expanding its footprint in the kingdom following an earlier agreement to supply trains to the country’s national rail operator.

The South Korean company, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group, announced that it signed the maintenance agreement this week with Morocco’s National Railways Office (ONCF) during a ceremony in Rabat attended by Hyundai Rotem CEO Lee Yong-bae and ONCF Director General Mohamed Rabie Khlie, along with other officials.

According to the company, the contract is linked to a double-decker train supply project signed in February 2025 and covers maintenance operations, materials management and technical support services.

Hyundai Rotem described the agreement as the largest overseas railway maintenance project in the company’s history. The contract covers the maintenance of all 440 rail cars that the company has agreed to supply to Morocco.

The project will be implemented over a 20-year period through a joint venture to be established between Hyundai Rotem and ONCF.

Under the agreement, the South Korean manufacturer will provide spare parts required for inspection and maintenance operations, operate a technical support office and transfer expertise related to comprehensive maintenance services. The company will also conduct testing inspections, repairs and component replacements necessary to ensure train performance and operational safety.

Hyundai Rotem said the project is expected to contribute to the development of public transportation in Morocco while supporting the company’s expansion in Africa’s railway market.

The company added that spare parts required for the maintenance program will be supplied by more than 200 South Korean firms, a move it said could support the growth of the railway industries in both South Korea and Morocco.

In February 2025, Hyundai Rotem won a separate contract worth 2.2 trillion won to supply trains to ONCF. The trains are expected to serve major Moroccan cities, including Casablanca, as the country continues infrastructure upgrades ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal.

A Hyundai Rotem official said the company would work to support the development of Morocco’s railway sector and public transportation network while ensuring the smooth delivery of the contracted trains and the efficient execution of long-term maintenance services.
