Dutch far-right politician Geert Wilders posted an anti-Islam insult on X over an image of Morocco players praying on the pitch hours before the national team’s World Cup opener against Brazil.
The post showed Atlas Lions players in collective prayer during a goal celebration. Wilders, leader of the Party for Freedom, added an expletive aimed at Islam.
The message spread quickly on X and drew criticism from users who accused Wilders of targeting Muslims and Moroccan supporters during one of the team’s most watched World Cup fixtures.
Wilders is the leader of the Dutch far-right Party for Freedom (PVV). He has repeatedly called for banning the Quran, closing mosques and stopping immigration from Muslim-majority countries.
This is not the first time Wilders has linked his anti-Islam and anti-Moroccan rhetoric to football.
