Islamophobic chants near Bernabeu add to scrutiny of Spanish football

Videos circulating online have shown a group of fans near Santiago Bernabéu Stadium chanting “Whoever doesn’t jump is a Muslim” ahead of Real Madrid’s Champions League match against Bayern Munich, in an incident that has drawn renewed attention to discriminatory behavior in Spanish football, Spanish media reported.

The chant was previously heard during the March 31 friendly between Spain national football team and Egypt national football team at the RCDE Stadium, which prompted FIFA to open disciplinary proceedings against the Royal Spanish Football Federation after the referee reported Islamophobic abuse.

The repeated incidents come as Spain prepares to co host the 2030 World Cup with Morocco and Portugal, increasing scrutiny over racism in stadiums.
