The Polisario Front has announced the death of Lahbib Mohamed Abdelaziz, a senior military commander and son of the movement’s late founder Mohamed Abdelaziz, marking the loss of one of its most prominent rising figures and a potential contender in future leadership succession discussions.
In a statement issued Sunday, the Polisario said Lahbib Mohamed Abdelaziz was killed alongside two other members and declared three days of mourning.
Regional media reports said Abdelaziz and his companions were killed in a drone strike after crossing the Moroccan defense wall, although those claims have not been independently verified.
Born in 1989 in the Tindouf camps in Algeria, Abdelaziz underwent several military training programs and rose through the ranks of the organization’s command structure.
According to information released by the Polisario, he served in a succession of military and administrative positions, including platoon commander, battalion commander, director of administration within the movement’s defense apparatus, member of the general staff and director of training.
In 2024, he was appointed commander of the First Military Region, one of the movement’s key operational sectors.
During the Polisario’s 16th Congress, he was elected to the movement’s National Secretariat. His father, Mohamed Abdelaziz, led the Polisario for nearly four decades until his death in 2016.
