The United States Mission to Morocco hosted a sports diplomacy event Thursday at Lycée d’Excellence de Rabat, bringing together representatives of the Green Bay Packers, Morocco’s national flag football team and local students.

The event focused on the American “student-athlete” model, highlighting the balance between academic achievement and athletic performance, as well as the importance of community service.

“We are here to celebrate the student-athlete, this uniquely American concept where students are on a university campus not only to get an education, but also to give back to their university and community through sport and community service,” said E. Rose Custis, director of Dar America.

Custis said the initiative aims to promote academic excellence, civic engagement and the technical skills required to become high-level athletes.

The program began with a panel discussion on the role of sports in social development, using the Green Bay Packers as an example of community impact, economic contribution and youth engagement.

Participants later took part in a practical training session that included dynamic stretching, agility drills, skills circuits, tactical playbook exercises, precision challenges and a mini tournament.

Nabyl Bekraoui, head of the Sports Science Laboratory at Lycée d’Excellence (LYDEX), said the event gave students a concrete understanding of the role athletes can play in society.

“Today’s event with the Green Bay Packers was a great opportunity for our students to see what it really means to give back to the community,” he said.

Bekraoui added that the Packers’ community-owned model demonstrates strong ties between athletes and society through initiatives such as support for cancer patients and orphaned children.

Chris Cohorst, a member of the Green Bay Packers, said he also met with members of We Can Morocco to discuss the development of flag football and share the team’s experience.

The training session involved several dozen students and is part of a broader, ongoing partnership aimed at expanding access to sports and youth development opportunities in Morocco.
