Moroccan security authorities launched an investigation Monday after an unidentified body was discovered inside a storage container near the Grand Mosque in the city of Ben Ahmed.

Police and local authorities were deployed to the scene shortly after the discovery, according to local sources.

The body, which was reportedly in an advanced state of decomposition, was found inside a box normally used to store extra prayer mats and furnishings for the mosque, particularly during periods of high attendance such as Friday prayers.

Authorities have not yet identified the deceased. Preliminary information suggests the body may belong to a man in his 50s, although officials have not released formal details pending further examination.

The body was removed from the scene for forensic analysis under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office. Investigators are expected to conduct an autopsy if deemed necessary to establish the victim’s identity and determine the cause and circumstances of death.

Judicial police officers, public security personnel and forensic specialists from the Ben Ahmed police district, which falls under the Settat police jurisdiction, secured the area and began collecting evidence from the surrounding vicinity.

Authorities are also expected to deploy a specialized canine unit from Settat to assist in the investigation and help determine whether the death resulted from natural causes, an accident or possible criminal activity.

No arrests have been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.
