Moroccan authorities have opened a judicial investigation after the body of a man was discovered inside an abandoned well in the commune of Had Soualem, in Berrechid province, officials said Thursday.
Members of the judicial unit of the Royal Gendarmerie in Settat launched the probe following a report from nearby residents who alerted authorities to the presence of the body.
A gendarmerie patrol, accompanied by civil protection teams, was dispatched to the scene shortly after receiving the alert. Security forces secured the area around the well before beginning an operation to recover the body.
The body was examined at the scene by forensic police specialists as part of efforts to gather initial evidence related to the circumstances of the death.
It was later transferred to the morgue for an autopsy ordered by the competent public prosecutor’s office to determine the exact cause of death and establish whether it resulted from a criminal act or an accidental incident.
According to local sources, the land where the abandoned well is located belongs to a current municipal councilor in Had Soualem who had previously been convicted in a drug trafficking case.
That detail prompted investigators to widen the scope of the inquiry and question several individuals to clarify all circumstances surrounding the case.
The Royal Gendarmerie continues field and technical investigations under the supervision of prosecutors, pending the results of the autopsy and forensic examinations, which are expected to determine the nature of the death and guide the judicial process.
The incident has caused concern among local residents and triggered heightened security attention in the area.
