Prosecutors in the Moroccan city of Fez have opened what authorities described as a “thorough and precise” judicial investigation into the collapse of a residential building that killed at least nine people and injured several others.
In an official statement issued Thursday, the public prosecutor at the Fez Court of Appeal said the investigation aims to determine the causes of the collapse, clarify all surrounding circumstances and identify any potential responsibilities.
The statement added that authorities would deal “with firmness” toward anyone found responsible for the incident and stressed the prosecution’s commitment to the “strict application of the law” to protect citizens’ lives.
The building collapsed earlier this week in the Jerandi Ain Nokbi neighborhood in Fez’s Jnan El Ward district.
Moroccan Housing Secretary of State Adib Benbrahim previously said the building collapse was linked to unauthorized construction.
Emergency services continued operations at the site as authorities pursued the investigation into one of the deadliest residential building collapses in Morocco in recent months.
