Hot conditions grip southern Morocco as rain showers loom in northern regions
In Morocco’s melon belt, which includes Tata, Zagora and parts of the Souss Valley, average dam fill rates dropped below 15 percent in some basins by late 2023. Groundwater levels in key oases and inland plains continued to fall, making watermelon ,a shallow-root, high-yield crop, increasingly unsustainable without deep pumping.

Morocco is expected to see continued unsettled weather conditions in the coming days, with noticeable temperature differences across regions as relatively hot weather persists in the south while thunderstorms and scattered showers are forecast in inland and mountainous areas.

Houssine Youabed, head of communication at the General Directorate of Meteorology, said weather conditions will remain generally stable and relatively hot, especially in the south, southeast and the southern provinces, while northern regions are expected to experience passing clouds of varying density and the possibility of light scattered rain on Sunday.

He added that coastal areas and plains will see low clouds accompanied by local fog during the morning and nighttime hours.

According to Youabed, unstable cloud formations are expected to develop on Monday and could bring localized thunderstorms, particularly over the Middle Atlas and the southern part of the Oriental region. These disturbances are expected to expand on Tuesday to include additional areas such as the High Atlas and the southeast.

Winds are forecast to be moderate to relatively strong in several regions and may occasionally be accompanied by dust storms, particularly in exposed inland zones.

Temperatures are also expected to fluctuate, with a slight increase at the beginning of the week before dropping somewhat by midweek, especially in northern areas.

Daytime highs are expected to range between 10 and 19 degrees Celsius in the Atlas Mountains and the Rif, between 20 and 25 degrees along the Mediterranean coast, northern Oriental region, northern and central Atlantic plains, and near the southern coasts.

Temperatures will range between 30 and 35 degrees in the Moulouya Valley, inland southern provinces and the southeast, while the hottest areas in the deep south and southeast could see highs between 35 and 42 degrees Celsius.

Most other parts of the kingdom are expected to record temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius.
