Two children were killed early Saturday after a partial collapse of a residential building in Tetouan’s old city, local authorities said.

The building, consisting of a ground floor and two upper levels, housed five families totaling 11 people at the time of the incident, authorities said in a statement.

Emergency services, including local authorities, security forces and civil protection teams, were dispatched immediately to the scene to carry out search and rescue operations and secure the surrounding area.

Rescue teams recovered the body of a 10-year-old boy from the rubble. An 8-year-old girl was pulled out in critical condition and rushed to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Authorities said the relevant public prosecutor’s office has been notified and an investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
