Technical glitches slow petition drive to end daylight saving time in Morocco

Technical issues affecting Morocco’s electoral registration platform have slowed the pace of signatures for a legal petition calling for a return to standard time, according to members of the committee behind the initiative.

Sources familiar with the matter said the petition had initially been expected to be submitted to the government in early May, but delays in collecting signatures caused by the glitches are likely to push back that timeline.

Mohcine El Ouadouari, head of the national committee overseeing the petition, said the online platform used to verify voter registration status is still experiencing technical problems.

While the website is operational, some users continue to receive error messages indicating their data cannot be found and advising them to visit local administrative offices. In some cases, repeated attempts allow access, he said.

El Ouadouari added that the SMS service “2727,” which allows citizens to check their registration status in electoral rolls, remains unavailable.

He said the committee had sought to formally contact the Interior Ministry to request technical fixes, but claimed a ministry employee refused to accept the correspondence without providing a legal justification.

According to the committee, these issues have noticeably slowed the collection of signatures. The latest available figures indicate around 4,000 signatures have been gathered so far, though that number is still being verified.

El Ouadouari said the initial goal of submitting the petition in early May now appears unlikely given the ongoing technical complications. He added that the committee continues to recruit local coordinators across the country, but warned that even full nationwide coverage would not offset the current obstacles.

Hamid Tahiri, deputy head of the committee, also pointed to persistent technical difficulties, particularly with the SMS service and the online portal, where some users’ data remains outdated or inaccessible.

He noted that the malfunction of the “2727” service is a major barrier, as many citizens do not know their electoral registration numbers, which are required to sign the petition.

Tahiri stressed the need for the Interior Ministry to resolve these issues promptly, especially given the proximity of upcoming legislative elections scheduled for September.

He added that the timing of the petition’s submission ultimately depends on internal assessments, but warned that continued technical disruptions will inevitably delay the process further.
